We’ll attempt to make this slightly less sleep inducing than other privacy policies and terms and conditions on the internet, but no promises. Here we go.
This policy sets out our privacy practices and explains how we handle the information we collect when you visit and use our sites, services, mobile applications, product, and content provided by Solu Publishing, in existence now or in the future (“Solu Services”). Please read it carefully.
What we may collect
We collect information about what Solu content you access or visit, information about your mobile device (such as device or browser type), information volunteered by you (such as through registration), the URLs of websites that referred you to us, and e-mail addresses of those who communicate with us via email.
When you log into Solu Services or load content from Solu Services, we collect and store your Internet Protocol address. We may use this information to fight spam, malware, and identity theft; to personalize Solu Services for you; or to generate aggregate, non-identifying information about how people use Solu Services.
When you create your Solu account, and authenticate via a third-party service like Facebook, we may collect, store, and periodically update the contact lists associated with that third-party account, so that we can make it easy for you to connect with your existing contacts from that service who are also on Solu.
Email communications with us
We may occasionally need to email you some administrative info, tell you something important about your account or changes to our services, or update you on new policies. You can always opt out of these emails. We will never email you to ask for your password or other account information. If you receive such an email, send it to us so we can correct the error.
Disclosure of your information
The information we collect is used to provide and improve Solu Services and content and prevent abuse. We don’t sell personal information about our users to any third party.
While Solu will provide the highest level of protection for your information, we may share your personal information with third parties in limited circumstances, including: (1) with your consent; or (2) when we have a good faith belief it is required by law, such as pursuant to a subpoena or other judicial or administrative order.
If we’re going to release your information, our policy is to provide you with advance notice unless we are prohibited from doing so by law or court order. If you do not challenge the disclosure request, we may be legally required to turn over your information.
We may disclose your information without providing you with prior notice if we believe it’s necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily harm to a person. In that case, we will endeavor to provide you with post-disclosure notice when permitted by law.
We will independently object to requests for access to information about users of our site that we believe to be improper.
Public user content
Solu is meant for privately or publicly publishing your stories. By default, whatever you share through Solu Services is private until you opt to make it public. Although we do provide tools to share your stories privately, we also allow the ability to publicly publish stories if you so choose. You should assume that any content you designate public will become publicly accessible.
This means that everyone, including search engines, may be able to see it. This content may also be copied and shared by others throughout the Internet, including through future features native to Solu Services, such as commenting and embedding.
You are free to remove publicly published content from your account, or even disable your account entirely. However, because of the fundamentally open nature of the Internet, the strong possibility that others will comment on or embed your content, and technological limitations inherent to Solu Services, copies of your content may exist elsewhere indefinitely, including in our systems.
Cookies are delicious but we're not talking about those kind of cookies. In this case, a cookie is a small piece of text, which often includes an anonymous unique identifier, sent to and saved by your web browser when you access a website.
Most browsers have an option for disabling cookies, but if you disable them you won’t be able to log into your Solu account, and won’t be able to use the vast majority of Solu.
We respect Do Not Track (“DNT”) settings in browsers. If you are logged out of our services and have DNT enabled, we will not set cookies that can be used to aggregate information about your usage. We may use some cookies to enhance your experience by storing preferences or options. Again, you must have cookies enabled in order to log into our services.
Solu uses third-party vendors and hosting partners, such as Amazon, to provide the necessary hardware, software, networking, storage, and related technology we need to run Solu. Although Solu owns its code, databases, and all rights to the Solu application, you retain all rights to your content.
Modifying your personal information or deleting your account
If you are a registered Solu user, you can access or modify your personal information or delete your account at anytime.
We aim to maintain our services in a manner that protects information from accidental or malicious destruction. This means that after you delete information from our services, we may not immediately delete residual copies from our active servers and may not remove information from our backup systems.
We use the latest and greatest security services to protect data transmitted to and from our site. However, no data transmission over the Internet is 100% secure, so we can’t guarantee the absolute security of this data. You use the service at your own risk, and you are responsible for taking reasonable measures to secure your account (such as keeping your password secret).
Changes to this Policy
Solu may periodically update this policy. We will notify you about significant changes in the way we treat personal information by sending a notice to the primary email address specified in your Solu account or by placing a prominent notice on our site before the changes take effect.
The most current version of the policy will always reside here.
We welcome questions, concerns, and feedback about this policy. If you have any suggestions for us, feel free to let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
TERMS & CONDITIONS.
This is a contract (“Terms”) between you and Solu Publishing (“Solu,” “we,” or “us”), applicable when you use our sites, services, mobile applications, products, and content provided by Solu, globally, in existence now or in the future (“Solu Services”).
These terms are a binding agreement.
Even if your eyes normally glaze over the word “Terms,” it’s a good idea to read this agreement carefully before you use Solu. For one thing, we want your feedback and suggestions on how to make our service better. (We’d really like to hear from you: email your input to email@example.com) For another, by using Solu Services, you agree to be bound by everything in these Terms. If you don’t agree to the Terms, please don’t use Solu.
You own the rights to the content you post on Solu. We don’t claim ownership over any of it. However, by designating your stories public on Solu, you give us permission to use your content solely to do the things we need to do to provide Solu Services, including, without limitation, storing, displaying, reproducing, and distributing your content. This may include promoting your content with partner companies or services for broader broadcast, distribution, or publication.
We will never sell your content to third parties without your explicit permission.
By publicly publishing on Solu, you agree to allow others to view your content.
We don’t pre-screen user content, but we have the right (though no obligation) to refuse or remove any content you post or transfer to Solu Services for any reason.
You are free to delete your content from Solu at any time, though there may be a delay in removing it from public view due to operational requirements. We retain, but do not publicly display, backup copies of your deleted content on our servers for a limited time after you delete your account. If you delete your account or content, it may be permanently unrecoverable.
You’re responsible for the content you submit to Solu and assume all risks associated with it, including anyone else’s reliance on its accuracy, or claims relating to intellectual property or other legal rights. By posting, you represent that you own or have the necessary rights to post the content on Solu, and that doing so doesn’t conflict with any other licenses you’ve granted. You’re welcome to copy your content from other places and publish it on Solu (and vice versa) as long as you didn’t give exclusive rights to other platforms or publishers.
The look and feel of Solu Services are copyright of Solu Publishing. All rights reserved. You may not duplicate, copy, or reuse any portion of the code, logos, or visual design elements without express written permission from Solu unless otherwise permitted by law.
We may modify these Terms at any time
We can change these Terms at any time. If the changes are material, we’ll let you know by email or posting a notice on the site before the changes go into effect. The notice will designate a reasonable amount of time (the “Notice Period”) after which the new terms will go into effect for all users. If you don’t agree to the new terms, please delete your account within the Notice Period. If you do not delete your account within the Notice Period, your content and use of the site will be subject to the new terms going forward.
You can access historical versions of our Terms of Service and other policies here.
We may modify our Services at any time
We do our best to provide you a reliable and evolving service, but we may change, terminate, or restrict access to any aspect of the service, at any time, without notice.
Security and Responsible Disclosures
We take security very seriously, and are always on the lookout for opportunities to make our service better.
Third-party account use for sign-ins
Because Solu is a storytelling community, we want people of all different backgrounds and experiences recalling and telling the stories of their life honestly and passionately. However, we do have a few basic human decency rules for our users to follow. Failure to comply with them may result in us taking action such as removing content, or suspending or deleting your account.
Don't be a menace to society
Active Threats of Violence
Don’t threaten violence against anyone. We will do our best to look at the context of the publication (EX: “I wanted to beat up the bully in the third grade.” versus “I am going to hurt so and so tomorrow.”..You get the idea.)
We are ardent defenders of freedom of speech. So, we generally think the best response to hateful speech is more speech, not censorship. Still, we reserve the right to take down hateful slurs, which tend to silence others while adding little if anything to posterity.
We don’t tolerate harassment. This includes:
-Stories that shame specific individuals, including images or altered images
-Stories with altered or unaltered copies of private communications between private individuals posted without the explicit consent of a party to the communication
-Stories- with non-public, personal information intended to target, blackmail, or harass people
-Repeated personally insulting notes, responses, story requests, or writer requests
-Intimate or explicit images taken or posted without the subject’s explicit consent (including revenge porn)
-Solu supports parody, commentary, and fair use. Users may speak freely about matters and people of public interest. We support vigorous debate of substantive issues. However, we won’t tolerate abusive behavior directed at private individuals. In deciding whether someone has violated the rules, we will take into account things like the context and nature of the posted information and applicable privacy laws.
Harm to Minors
Don’t post anything relating to minors that is sexual or violent. Don’t bully or harass minors.
Don’t spam. Don’t use deceptive tags or links or otherwise mislead others about what you’ve posted. Don’t embed malicious code in your posts. Don’t use deception to generate revenue or traffic. Don’t write posts aimed primarily at affiliate marketing.
Mass Registration and Automation
Don’t register accounts or post content automatically, systematically, or programmatically.
Copyright and Trademark Infringement
Respect the copyrights and trademarks of others. Unless you’re authorized to use someone else’s copyrighted or trademarked work (either expressly or by legal exceptions and limitations like fair use), don’t do it. It’s our policy to respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement under our Terms of Service and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Don’t impersonate someone else to deceive people. Parody and ridicule are fine, but make clear that that’s what you’re doing.
No porn. There are plenty of other outlets for that.
Don’t post content that violates others’ privacy, including personally identifying or confidential information like credit card numbers, social security numbers, or non-public contact information.
Phishing and Other Frauds
Don’t use Solu to engage in phishing or fraud.
Promotion and Glorification of Self-Harm
Don’t promote or glorify self-harm, such as cutting, eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia, and suicide.
If You Break the Rules
If it looks like you’ve violated these policies, we may send you an email and ask you to explain what you’re up to and why. Because, hey, we know context is important, and we want to understand the big picture. If you don’t adequately explain yourself or fix the problem, we may suspend or block your account or remove your content. We care a lot about fairness and do our best to act that way. But we reserve the right to suspend accounts or remove content, without notice, for any reason, particularly to protect our services, infrastructure, users, or community. We reserve the right to enforce, or not enforce, these policies at our sole discretion. These policies don’t create a duty or contractual obligation for us to act in any particular manner.
We also reserve the right to change these rules using the procedures in our Terms of Service.
